is it in the genes?

well, I got an assignment yesterday, to write an essay on the role of genes vs nurturing in a human's life
so...here we go, do be the critic...

with the recent discovery of genes and the intensified research in it's direction, many people have started raising questions....if we decide our progeny's genes future, aren't we taking away their rights? But, before such discussions, we must understand how much of a role genes play in a persons life.As the great genius of Albert Einstein and Agatha Christie illustrate, it's not our genes that make us, but it's how we want to be, how we grow.

While the intellect of Albert Einstein is world renowned, not many know that he had to cope with multiple learning disabilities in his life. He was unable to read till he reached the age of three, and couldn't write till he was eight, and suffered from dyslexia. Yet, now, his genius is undisputed. Despite his various shortcomings, he grew up to be a highly regarded scientist, appreciated by both the scientific and global communities. While somewhat eccentric, his personality as a kind, understanding individual is also reputed. These were not given to him by his genes, these were the lessons he learnt from life, It was the way he grew up to be, not the way he was born.

The various novels by Agatha Christie are globally renowned, the adventures of M. Poirot known to young and old alike. Still, the general populace remain unaware that the genius author who designs he most intricately delightful novels also suffered from dyslexia. For one to have such a literary setback, become one of the most respected literary figures of the world is unbelievable for most. Such success from such an ailment is truly remarkable.

As the above examples indicate, it's not our genes that decide who we will be, it's us, our environment, our desires. Albert Einstein and Agatha Christie, alongwith Alexander Graham Bell, Walt Disney and many others are the proof that it's a person who shapes his life. This doesn't mean genes don't matter, they do, and very much so; only that a person's growth and desires matter much more so. Genes only give us tools to work with, it's up to us what to do with them.
