True name

psycho-logy.
It was a bad idea for a bit of "light" reading. But it was rewarding, although very... illuminating.
It's certainly the heavy stuff. Heavier than Atlas' burden.

Have you read Eragon? In that series, there exists a concept of a "true" name. A name that totally defines your person, your ambitions, motivation, desires, dreams, passions and the list goes on. In the book, a great master tells Eragon that the journey to the name itself is great, and refuses to share his true name with Eragon. Eragon is absolutely exasperated; why can;t the old guy just say it? Certainly a lot faster, no?

Well Eragon found out why. Let me tell you too (though I found it out myself, since Eragon never bothered to explain it). Some knowledge is only good for you when you are ready for it. I know that sounds like bullshit, but it ain't. There are (obviously) things about you you would rather not admit. Things, secrets that are best left alone. There are also parts of you that you never know existed, questions you can't answer unless they actually become reality.
This is what Oromis (the teacher) was talking about. Are you ready to meet yourself? Will you like what you see? Can you accept it? Or would it be something unexpected and bad and you'd end up totally hating yourself or scared or confused or everything at the same time.

That is why one's true name is so precious. In the book, it's said whoever knows your true name can order you to do anything. Even if you get out of the book, and even you lack the fancy words, true names still hold that power. If you can truly understand someone, then you can certainly manipulate them, no? Simply knowing a person's taste, you can make them happy and delighted or sour and sad. When you know the true existence of a person, can't you manipulate it?

But, imho (in my humble opinion), I think the actual power of the true names lies in the fact of self realization. The ability to know oneself, to understand oneself is something that almost all of us lack. Isn't that true?
But this is one journey that you have to take for yourself, and trust me, if whatever I've seen till now is anything to go by, the journey is totally worth it!

Oh, and. That journey is called life!~
Ciao! :)
